Chuck Commanda
Chuck Commanda is an esteemed Algonquin master canoe builder and cultural teacher from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg community. He has dedicated his life to preserving the traditional art of birchbark canoe building, an integral part of Algonquin heritage. Taught by his grandparents William and Mary Commanda—renowned keepers of Indigenous knowledge—Chuck carries forward their legacy, crafting canoes that reflect the intricate knowledge and deep respect for nature that defines Anishinaabe culture.
