Supporting Community-Led Conservation Through Monitoring and Training

Tristan holds a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Lakehead University and has spent the past three years working in the Northeast Region (NER) with the forest industry while pursuing his Registered Professional Forester (R.P.F.) designation.

In this new role, Tristan will be working with First Nation communities to support a biodiversity monitoring pilot project under the Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) mycorrhizal inoculation of forest seedlings initiative. The goal of the pilot is to establish a community-led biodiversity monitoring program guided by the VERRA Nature Framework standards. Tristan will collaborate closely with Lands and Resources departments, offering training and tools to help them take the lead in monitoring efforts for years to come.

Monitoring methods in this project will include the use of insect sensors, bird monitoring through Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs), game cameras for both small and large mammals, as well as soil and water sampling.

As an Indigenous R.P.F., Tristan is passionate about contributing to conservation in a way that uplifts community voices and supports long-term stewardship of the land. He is excited to help build the capacity for Indigenous-led environmental monitoring throughout the region.

Please join us in welcoming Tristan to the Wahkohtowin team. We’re excited to have him on this journey with us.
