GUARDIAN PROGRAM
Contract Worker
Guardians are critical members of the Wahkohtowin program to learn, work, and steward traditional First Nation territories in Northern Ontario. The Wahkohtowin Guardian will be called upon to deliver land stewardship programs on an as needed basis. Contract Guardians will have adequate mentorship and training for assigned tasks.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Silviculture Field Work: tree planting, manual brushing, and vegetation surveys.
Field Surveys and Assessments: data collection, surveying ecologically significant areas, conduct environmental monitoring.
Birch tap: Sap collection and evaporation.
Culture: interact with Elders and Knowledge Holders respectfully.
Community Engagement: Support event preparation and participate in workshops and cultural activities.
Training and Certification: Complete training as required.
Safety: promote and advance safety practices and culture within the organization by following protocols, SOPs, and filling out paperwork as required.
COMPETENCIES
Knowledge: knowledge of First Nation’s cultural protocols or openness to learning about First Nations cultural protocols.
Skills: Microsoft word and excel.
Attitude: positive working outlook and respect for the land, women, and culture.
Communication: good verbal communication.
Safety: commitment to safety culture.
Experience: working outdoors in remote areas is an asset.
REQUIREMENTS
Class G drivers licence
Dependable
Field positions require working under intense conditions on the territory, including in rugged terrain, near water, and under sometimes extreme weather conditions that can change rapidly. Some tasks are physically demanding and may include working long days. Safety is a priority and you must demonstrate that you are comfortable in the outdoors.
