GUARDIAN PROGRAM
Guardians
We are seeking 12 enthusiastic community members to join our 2026 Guardian Program. As a Guardian, you will engage in hands-on learning experiences that blend traditional Indigenous knowledge with contemporary environmental practices. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to land stewardship, cultural preservation, and community engagement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Silviculture Field Work: train and carry out silviculture activities such as tree planting, manual brushing, and vegetation sampling.
Field Surveys and Assessments: data collection, training and application of GIS surveys, surveying ecologically significant areas, conduct environmental monitoring, including forest, water, land, and wildlife assessments.
Culture: Be open to integrating cultural protocols in daily activities and learning from Elders and Knowledge Holders respectfully.
Community Engagement: Participate in workshops and cultural activities. Support the 13 moons calendar by assisting with events and event preparation as needed.
Training and Certification: Complete various training modules and certifications, including those offered through partnerships with educational institutions.
Safety: promote and advance safety practices and culture within the organization by following protocols, SOPs, and filling out paperwork as required.
Work with fellow Guardians to create a group culture of safety, support and a positive work environment.
Communication: convey technical forestry aspects of forestry work that avoids the use of herbicide in critical forest ecosystems with Guardians and community members.
COMPETENCIES
Knowledge: knowledge of First Nation’s cultural protocols or openness to learning about First Nations cultural protocols.
Skills: Microsoft word and excel.
Attitude: positive working outlook and respect for the land, women, and culture.
Communication: good verbal communication.
Safety: commitment to safety culture.
Experience: working outdoors in remote areas is an asset.
REQUIREMENTS
Class G Drivers License
The Indigenous Guardian position is physically demanding and will include packing heavy field equipment to remote sites and working long days. Applicants must be in good physical health to carry out the job effectively without injury.
EXPECTATIONS
First Cohort - Mid May to the first week of August
Second Cohort - Mid August to Mid October
